Primarily a film festival, and it should be respected as such, Cannes in the past few years has notoriously become one of the highlight in the annual calendar due to its glitzy red carpet. Hwever, Cannes this time around was rather a less dramatic affair…. what is with red carpet events this year… however regular fashionistas gave us moments that were definitely worth watching what they would wear next on the red carpet. From Sonam Kapoor to Julianne Moore… even Katrina Kaif made her debut at the red carpet at this edition of Cannes. There were some fun brilliant moments and some missteps but our fashionistas did their best and rocked every thing they donned….
LOOK 1 : Opting for an Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla ruffle sari, Sonam kicked off things with a bang in the pastel look. The ruffled sari with a strong cutwork appliqued blouse was an absolute stunner. The plunging neckline blouse, the slick hairdo and Suhani Pittie earrings made this for one subtle, strong, sexy and yet romantic and dreamy look all rolled into one. While a bit tad overdone for a press-meet, but where do you go big if not Cannes
LOOK 2: Her second look was a simple Ulyana Sergeenko bubble frock dress in blush pink that she donned for her Loreal makeup duties and do some BTS for the makeup line that the brand was set to launch. With a simple milkmaid braid updo and white shoes and she’s good to go.
LOOK 3: Sonam made a jaw dropping splash on the red carpet in the Ralph and Russo draped couture gown. First of all she had me at the color. The electric blue punched perfectly against the red carpet. Draped at the hips is not an easy look to pull off but credit to Ms Kapoor for not looking overwhelmed in the ensemble and rather have a chic outing. With bright coral lips and nails, she finished it off with old hollywood glam hair and Giuseppe Zanotti heels. On any other actress, on any other day this would have devoured the person, but Sonam struts her stuff in it like nobody’s business.
LOOK 4: A tad bit overdone for a book launch but a beautiful look from Sonam was her outing in Ashi Studio Couture for Vikas’s book launch. The plunging neckline and overtly voluminous ensemble was perfectly styled with a wispy do, giving it an air of romance and those shades, she ain’t called a fashionista for no reason
LOOK 5: In an attempt to be fun, and you can see that, for an animation movie, with contrasting ruby red earrings, it was all perfect on paper, but the feathered Elie Saab gown failed to ignite a certain wow moment for Ms. Kapoor who looked like a rather overwhelmed by the feathery number and the severe do didn’t help either to support the look. The look came across more of a misstep situation in Ms. Kapoor’s repertoire… but lets just cut the girl some slack!! girl just wanna have some fun
LOOK 6: Fiesty fierce and Bitchy, Sonam’s last look for the Chopard party was the butterfly constructed black and gold Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla ensemble with a draped skirt. It was the perfect bang that Sonam needed to bounce back from her last look and finish off her Cannes journey this year with a bang (would have been rather disappointing if feathered one would have been her last look). The severe do, the smoky eyes, the pair of earrings, the designer duo outdid themselves with this customized outing proving why they are one of the best and legendary in the business of fashion in India.
AISHWARIYA RAI BACHCHAN:
LOOK 1: Kicking off things with a Sabyasachi print jumpsuit, Ash made things interesting from the word go as she stepped in Cannes. A regular feature at Cannes, Ash’s Sabyasachi was a splash of print amongst the usual solids. Breaking the monotony with a tiger embellished belt and the clutch the red lips and perfect hair was all she needed to pull off this look. While some may feel that a bold lip was a bit much, I felt it complimented the look perfectly and I wouldn’t change a thing off this look.
LOOK 2: She turned to her trusted Elie Saab with a green embellished gown for her first outing on the red carpet. Not as Snazzy as her last year gold Cavalli gown, the outfit was right up her alley. The beaded gown with a knee length lining was okay-ish since we have seen her out do herself. The dark lip went with the look perfectly.
LOOK 3: For a day off, Ash picked a Salvatore Ferragamo dress for her day out at Cannes. The ribbed dress hugged ex- Ms World in all the right places and she managed to perfectly enjoy her day out while on the go.
LOOK 4: The photocall of her upcoming movie Jazbaa saw Aishwariya Rai in an oxblood tiered Oscar Dela Renta gown. The voluminous gown may feel a tad bit OTT for the photocall but come on!! its Cannes and she looked smashing with the perfect bold lip accenting it all off with just a gold ring. Contrasting against the ship and the sky, the deep color against Ash’s skin looked just perfectly done and measured.
LOOK 5: While everyone loved her Ralph and Russo outing because it was so un-Aishwariya… I found the look a tad bit not age appropriate. While she has gone out all edgy and stepped out of her comfort zone (remember that two tone Armani Prive, who could’ve said she was preggers), this look either felt right up Sonam’s alley than Ash’s. The splash beaded burst of embellishment was nice… or maybe it was the hairdo that was too soft for this look or was it the showing of the leg.. something for me felt a tad bit off and too ‘young’ for her.
LOOK 6: One of my favorite looks of her was this simple ruffled shirt and pants in white contrasted with a bold red lip that this beauty donned for her meetups and press meetings. Nothing said perfectly business and yet social like this do. It was a perfect balance between fierce and soft, one that she achieved brilliantly in these Stella McCartney separates.
LOOK 7: However changing into another set of McCartney separates with a simple button down shirt and animal printed pants, this look seemed more of a relaxed casual outing. Credit to Mrs. Bachchan for pulling off this look with such polish since it could’ve come off as a PJs. Soft hair finished her this look as well that she picked up for another round of press meetings.
LOOK 8: My favorite look so far from her, was one that had all the Red Carpet elements and was perfect if she would’ve saved it for the amFAR gala or another red carpet outing. But she opted to don this gorgeous Georges Chakra ruffled gown for Lo’real press meetings. While the make up was subdued coz it was not a red carpet event, Ash looked ah-mazing in the flaming gown that looked right out of hunger games’s Katniss’s wardrobe. It was gorge, on point and fiery.
LOOK 9: A lavendar floral Elie Saab was the order of the day for Mrs. Bachchan who once again was the hostess at amFAR gala. Going the pretty route, that we have seen her nail time and again, Ash aced this one too in her usual charm. Dainty makeup, a necklace completed her strapless ensemble, which is not an easy color to pull off… but who are we kidding!! its Ash.
Look 1: In an Alexander Mcqueen, with the jacket, the outfit was rather boring. The fierce actress herself was rather sheepish knowing the look wasn’t upto her usual mark. The black cut out jacket was good, but the dress itself failed to make a mark. How many boring black bras does the world need to see!! haven’t we seen enough of them already. Even her signature peachy makeup and brilliant hair failed to raise the look
Look 2: The lady really turned it around in a Giles Deacon print gown for the premiere of Carol. While it was a bit much!! ok a bit much too much but that is what Cannes Red carpet is for. The print moved with Cate as she glided down the red carpet and up the stairs and made sure all eyes were on her as the dramatic volume of the gown combined with print gave it a whole lot like a butterfly/dragonfly effect.
Look 3: For her third outing, Queen Cate went with the slick Armani Prive that hugged the actress in all the right curves. The kimono inspired gown with a big bow up front was fierce and chic, one that Cate completed with a pair of gold hand cuffs. The black on black applique detail was subtle and the japanese attributed silhouette gave the whole look a rather relaxed as well as a chic tailored vibe. Armani Prive and Blanchett are a match made in fashion heaven, one that never fails to disappoint.
Look 1: Richa attended the photocall of her movie Masaan in a printed Giles Deacon dress that was the perfect cheery summer outfit that complimented her peachy skin tone. With a simple updo, Richa kept things simple letting the print do all the talking and scored brownie points for doing so. The tropical print was a perfect fit for the beachy Cannes and thus with tan heels, was a perfect winner.
Look2: Aishwariya Rai wasn’t the only one to sport Sabyasachi at Cannes. Richa donned an overall vintage floral print sari with embellishment for her movie’s premiere with a sequined blouse and a sequined box clutch. I freaking loved how the whole look was styled simply to perfection with a wispy hairdo and long earrings. The look had such a non fussy and comfy air about it with Richa owning the the look completely sizzling in it. It was chic, simple and effective yet with that sassy glam without going OTT. Chic to perfection.
Look3: For her third outing, Richa picked a structured pink Gauri and Nainika peplum gown. While I loved her sartorial choice and her decision to keep things simple, it was the makeup that was a bit of a letdown on her dusky skin tone. A dewy makeup would have been perfect. The simple pearl earrings and a slight hint of milkmaid braid hair do bun rounded off her this look.
Look 1: The powerhouse actress has never resorted to norms and stuck to her guns and that is what Nandita Das did. For opening night she picked up a gold hand woven Anvaila Sari with a gold potli. While many felt it was too much gold, the green lining of the potli was the perfect accent to the whole look and the actress looked resplendent in her earthy look that was a refreshing change from all the glam.
Look 2: With Nandita, everytime she wears a handwoven sari (a signature of her now), she doesn’t let it look costumey. Instead the whole look has such a non-chalant air about it, the whole look feels contemporary and relaxed. For the Kering dinner, the dusky actress looked smashing in a black in pink sari with just a silver neckpiece that provided that further rooted the earthiness and contrasted the whole look at the same time without overbearing it.
JULIANNE MOORE rocked a metallic and black gown from Armani Prive couture at the opening night of Cannes and premiere of ‘La Tete Haute’. The feathered number with an oversized top and a streamlined silhouette waist down with a plunging neckline was the perfect drama Moore needed at Cannes (after her Chanel debacle at Oscars). It was a fiesty look that the actress embodied and owned every inch of. Providing the rich pops of color through her emerald jewels, the actress finished it off with a slick do and smoky eyes for that perfect ‘bitch’ moment
While EMMA STONE did have a bit of a Nicole Kidman moment at the premiere of her movie Irrational Man, it was the photocall where she shone in an Oscar Dela Renta ruffled and lace LBD. With an onpoint makeup and her hair (i love that color) in a side bun, she rocked the hell outta that dress even on a windy day. A peachy pink lip color was all she needed to finish things off.
EMILY BLUNT on the other hand was a vision on the premiere stepping things up from her photocall peter pilotto look. Sporting a studded Stella McCartney gown, Blunt looked mighty statuesque with her hair sculpted into a perfected bun. The large emeralds dangling fom her ears provided ample pops of rich (no puns inteded) accents and thus I did question her hand jewelry which felt a tad bit too much and could have been avoided for a much more sparked up drama. A minor gripe nevertheless to say she looked A-mazing.
Time seems to have stop for actress RACHEL WEISZ who returned to spotlight after quite a while and it was like she never left. Attending the photocall for The Lobster in a Narcisco Rodriguez jumpsuit, the demure actress looked snazzy and just perfect with the jumpsuit accentuating her figure perfectly. The slick wet hair look was just bang on complimentary of the look that everyone sit up that Ms. Weisz is back with a bang. For the premiere she picked up a Louis Vuitton that was unlike her usual self. Not the pick I would have gone for since in made the petite actress look much broad, but was commendable for her to try out new things. Her makeup was on point with peach lips and perfectly styled tousled waves.
Making her debut at Cannes, KATRINA KAIF checked in with surprisingly edgy monochrome seperates by designer Milly, a far departure for Ms. Kaif. Later for the opening night and premiere, made her debut in a floral embellished off shoulder structured Oscar Dela Renta number that was right up her alley. It was one of those pretty ones that Ms. Kaif is used to and right in her comfort zone. While her hair may have had stopped her from having a perfect moment on day 1 (though it wasn’t a much of a deal breaker for me), she rocked in a red Lace number at Mad Max Fury’s premiere. I am usually averse to red on red carpet but here it worked wonders for her. The Elie Saab number hugged the actress in all the right places and the overall mono tone elongated the actress’s frame. going for red lips, her burgundy hair, parted centrally played off perfectly against the red in this look.
