The Oscars Red Carpet

Posted on Updated on

Apart from the winners in motion pictures, Academy awards or Oscars is one cynosure event that is waited because of the red carpet. While many fumble the best turnouts were the one classic simple ones (golden rule of awards red carpet). I definitely was up at 5 am only for the red carpet. My picks in no particular order:
lupita-nyongo-vogue-2mar14-pa_b prada fred leighton
LUPITA NYONG’O: The princess of red carpet, Lupita Nyong’o has been having quite the chic run on the red carpet this award season. With her structured columns, the debutante has been turning heads like a veteran on the red carpet. However, for the Oscars, Miss Nyong’o decided to ditch her structured run for a much more princessy look – one choice I am glad she made, going out the unexpected route and pulling it off with aplomb. The powder blue Prada dress was the perfect choice for the young Best Supporting Actress winner. The color, apart from looking brilliant against her skin, gave the light gown a fairy tale appeal with her sashaying down that red carpet with a playful confidence of debut and sass of a veteran. What is amazing is how her innocence is perfectly complimented with that gown during her interviews and here’s to hoping it isn’t the last we see of her. She finished off her look with a studded headband and jewels by Fred Leighton.

SANDRA BULLOCK: America’s sweetheart and Best Actress nominee for the night, when Sandra Bullock walks the red carpet, you know Hollywood royalty is gracing the oscars. Stunning in a navy McQueen gown with the side sash draped detail and sweetheart neckline, Sandy, cut the perfect red carpet picture with not a hair out of place. With her side parted hair tousled into waves at ends, Sandra Bullock was definitely one of the best of the night on the red carpet.

CATE BLANCHETT: When you are having such a brilliant run at the award season, all eyes are definitely going to be on you since you are the front runner. Ms. Blanchette doesn’t disappoint one bit in her nude beaded Armani Prive gown. The flared gown was nothing trailing and was just the right length for her. Also going the side parted route, Ms. Blanchette however changed it up with a retro vibe to her mane with tousled hair  and minimalist makeup. Also going for the ethically mined and oversized light teal Chopard earrings that perfectly went together with the beading detail, this Best Actress Winner of the night went home also being one of the best dressed of the night.

dior $15 million worth of Harry Winston diamonds.
CHARLIZE THERON: The evil Queen in her full demeanor, Charlize Theron in her Dior gown made sure she turned heads on the red carpet despite not being nominated in any of the categories. The mesh play of the black with pleating detail and barely there straps, the gown was an absolute winner. Pairing them up with Harry Winston jewels worth $15 million, and her pixie hair cut done up neatly in a side part, Charlize was one fierce chick on the red carpet.

Atelier Versace
KATE HUDSON: Cutting a chic picture on the red carpet in an Atelier Versace, Kate Hudson turned up taking a twist on the simplicity of the classic red carpet look. The silver gown with the exquisite bead work and the trail spelt glam from the word go. The uber chic look with the plunging neckline went a different route with the shoulder covering cape (she took it off for an equally stunning look during the ceremony). The sleek side parted waves added in the perfect compliment to the whole look which was put together without a false note and was in perfect balance.

AMY ADAMS: The polished one of the night, Amy Adams proved sometimes less is more with her look. Turning up at the ceremony in a tuxedo inspired navy Gucci Premiere gown, the actress was in total confidence (gone is the shy amy on the red carpet thanks to American Hustle). Daring to go against the grain, the petiete actress did her hair in a classic swiss roll updo showing off her shoulders in the strapless number. The navy gown was accented with pink and navy Tiffany and Co. jewels that were in quite an interesting shape and form. She may have not won the award for best actress for the night, she definitely was one of the chic and the best dressed one.

jenny packam and chopard
JULIE DELPY: There is something inanely attractive about this french actress that just compelled me to include her on the list. The laid back glamorous approach in that Jenny Packam gown accented with red lips was all it took for this actress to stun everyone on the red carpet in the shimmer sheer gown. The Before series actress looked every bit seductive and hot without even trying…maybe that is where lied her charm. She finished her look with the middle-side parted hair and Chopard jewels

Golden Globes – red carpet hits and misses

Posted on Updated on

The award season is upon us and kicking it up with Golden globes, I was not at all disappointed after the boring emmys. Heres a lowdown of who I thought who scored and who missed out on the oppurtunity to dress up

Lupita Nyong’o: Deciding to go natural with her locks, Lupita aces in the razor cut quiff hair. Keeping the makeup natural, she hits a home run with that Ralph Lauren off shoulder cape gown that pretty much makes us forget Tom Ford on Gwyneth Paltrow. The Kenyan raised actress looked effortlessly glam in a red column that fell off her shoulders with a 6os style cape flaring behind her. The look was all about clean lines and silhouette and she succeeded in bringing that forward. Kicking off award season, she is one to look out for. Finishing off the look with minimal jewellery and dyed-to-match shoes, minimal makeup on that flawless skin, she topped it off with a perfect smile.

Olivia Wilde: Who says moms need to look matronly and flowy to hide those curves on the red carpet. Take a cue from Olivia Wilde in that bewitching green (reminded me of Florence Welch at Met Ball). The Gucci OTT beaded gown could have gown either way but is downplayed by the color and good fit wherein she is not afraid to hide her belly and rather flaunted the shape. The ombre hair (though out of trend) somehow the color just works with that dark green offsetting it perfectly.

Margot Robbie: The young starlet of wolf of wall street went the risque route of doing the both i.e. deep neckline and high slit both in one dress but managed to come out with flying colors with her classic styling. Showing off her flawless skin in the Gucci gown, Margot kept it chic in a simple sweet bun with minimal jewels (Van Cleef & Arpels “Snowflake” earrings and ring) letting the gown shine. The clean, dewy makeup kept her glowing on the red carpet making her one of the best dressed of the night.

Amy Adams: The American Hustle actress in the deep cut Valentino made an appearance in one of the popular colors of the night, RED. Not a color that you associate with the demure Adams, but she works her American Hustle inspired gown that was an unexpected combo of merlot and tomato red working together. The plunging neckline partly works also because Adam’s petite frame lets her experiment with that kind of bold silhouette. The best actress in comedy or musical winner (she was long overdue now) nailed it with a braided updo and a diamond pendant working that red on the red carpet.

Cate Blanchette: The best actress drama winner, Cate might be on an award sweep this season. Cutting a perfect picture of old world Hollywood drama in an Armani Prive gown, Cate was definitely one of the best dressed of the night. The black lace gown with nude overlay was a perfect flare with a high neck, an open back and cap sleeves covered with petals of lace. The skirt is a layered gauze, dotted with shimmery black Swarovski crystals. It’s sheer and sultry but perfectly measured. The woman likes to take certain risks without being too safe and that is what she did with her dress. The nude shade of red, the perfectly styled faux bob and Chopard diamond earrings from the label’s Green Carpet Collection ( beautiful 11-carat, marquise-cut white diamonds) finished off her look

Emma Watson: The young brit rebel, Emma watson had a backless surprise as she strolled down the red carpet. The 23 year old starlet proved to be a red carpet maverick by breaking the major rule of award season red carpet…separates. While on the front her ribbon bow tied gown looked demure but as the front slit came into play and she turned around to reveal the back wherein the gown was backless all the way down and a pair of dark satin pants. The fashion forward dress from Dior (a jennifer lawrence territory) was definitely a game changer and one of the most talked about on the red carpet as to how risque was it for the ceremony. Her blue Roger Vivier Ergo Sexy pumps said that this was a lady in command. The hair and makeup was kept to a no-fuss minimum with pulled back mane and two wisps of hair. She rounded off the look with Edie Parker bag and much coveted Mise en Dior pearl earring. In just one lobe, naturally.

Sofia Vergara/Emma Roberts: Both the ladies did black gowns and accented them off with turquoise jewellery. While Vergara wore a voluminous Zac Posen gown, with possibly the biggest flare and ruffles of the night, the strapless gown showed off her curves brilliantly. What was more enchanting was she was in total control and wore the gown with equal panache rather than letting it over shadow her. Accenting it off with a 60s style chunky turquoise necklace, she finished it off with her usual swept hair. Emma roberts on the other hand looked way past her years but cut an elegant picture in her black Lanvin gown with an interesting wide neck wavy neckline and how it fell on her body. She kept the simple clean vibe by carrying off minimum makeup but at the end reminding her that she is just a young one having some fun, added in the pop of turquoise earrings.

Sandra Bullock: Man oh Man!! why would you wear that. While I like Prabal gurung to a certain capacity, this in my wildest dreams wouldn’t have been a pick for the red carpet. While the silk is as is difficult since it crumples alot and needs to be steamed, the colors too didn’t help the cause much. While Miss Bullock tried to salvage the look through her effortless natural and fun makeup, the dress left a lot to be desired by this red carpet veteran. What happened Sandra!! here is to hoping that it was just a minor hiccup and she’ll be back.

Jennifer Lawrence: Possibly the most made fun of dress this award season!! yet… (but is probably gonna laugh it off and take it in her stride and that is what we love about her), J. Law’s Dior was wrong on many counts. Confused between a gothic bride and sheets wrapped around with ribbons at odd placements on her frame, J.Law sort of disappointed in her this outing, after a series of brilliant appearances while promoting her movie, this one turned out to be a dud!! and lets face it, a gown that you can create out of wrapping around a duvet (you have to see the pictures people have posted) is not the best pick of the lot

Tina Fey: While it was good to see print on red carpet, unlike her co-host Amy poehler, who was sleek and chic on the red carpet, Fey didnt fare so well. The extra flare, the bumped up hair with half let loose hair with that strapless number made her look a bit dated on the red carpet. The Carolina Herrera gown did not do much for the mistress of ceremonies and rather felt like a lackluster last minute attempt. While she donned some pretty interesting gowns during the show, the red carpet one took a backseat.

Drew Barrymore: Being preggers is no excuse to dress up like what Barrymore did. Possibly a page from Olivia Wilde’s style diaries would have helped, but for the night, Barrymore looked plain simple awful. The while the high low hemline was interesting, the print and the embellishment and the color made her look like a giant cupcake walking down the red carpet. Drew Barrymore, who is expecting her second child, was all natural glow but the Monique Lhuillier number was just too loud for the ceremony. We have had many a pregnant ladies on the red carpet, but Drew!! what happened gurl!

Paula Patton: What she made up in make up, she more than missed the mark on the red carpet. Paula Patton in the big ruffled dress on one side was quite an oddity in ivory on the red carpet. A tricky silhouette t pull off, which literally devours her. Not the Vera farmiga kind where you make the ruffles work, she had her jewellery and makeup bang on but her pick for the dress of the night left much to be desired

Lena Dunham: bad makeup, bad hair, tricky color and bad fit, there were more issues than vogue that cheery lena dunham was dealing with on the red carpet. The cheery yellow was a fun color but was let down by other factors that did not make much of a pleasant sight on the red carpet. Moreover smeared lipstick across teeth added to the long list of already woes that poor thing was facing. time to change your stylist

Emma Stone: dull, drab, weary even though it was a chanel frock with weird front slit, it did look like a piece of rag. Not an awards night material at all.
