Cannes 2015 : Splashes and Ripples on Red Carpet

Untitled-1Primarily a film festival, and it should be respected as such, Cannes in the past few years has notoriously become one of the highlight in the annual calendar due to its glitzy red carpet. Hwever, Cannes this time around was rather a less dramatic affair…. what is with red carpet events this year… however regular fashionistas gave us moments that were definitely worth watching what they would wear next on the red carpet. From Sonam Kapoor to Julianne Moore… even Katrina Kaif made her debut at the red carpet at this edition of Cannes. Canne-ing it

So sorry, had been meaning to do this post for ever since Cannes ended however suddenly a few things came up therefore this took a backseat. Now that, i am done with other stuff, I finally came around doing this. Cannes this year was a rather quiet and lackluster event, esp. for red carpet, for which it is notoriously famous for. However there were quite a few brilliant runs by women and some good spottings that made it to my list for this year.

THE VETERAN: When it comes to red carpet appearances, Miss Blanchett has pretty much mastered the art with her experimental saritorial choices, while pulling them off with a confidence which puts a 6 yr old to shame. She exudes a certain amount of charm, cool and ethereal air about her yet when you see her in her interviews is humble to the core. The woman knows her body and knows what looks good and picks out the best one for herself. She had a smashing run throughout her Cannes stay and needless to say was effing brilliant

LOOK 1: The RTW Valentino gown looked more couture than many other couture ones gracing the Chopard event that night. She looked divine wearing a grey Valentino Pre-Fall 2014 sheer gown with silver metallic floral lace embroidery, feathered short sleeves and matching collar style. Pairing her gown with, of course, Chopard jewels and her shorter do up in sorta spikes, the understated opulence of the look was ironically hard to ignore.

LOOK 2: Attending Vanity fair and Armani yatch party, she wore, no prizes for guessing, an Armani Prive ensemble. The lightly embellished details with lace overlay and a cascading barely-there organza peplum detail, she cut a chic picture. Refraining from any accessories with her shorter do side parted, the woman knocks it out the part with just accentuating her eyes giving the whole look an edgy-meets-feminine vibe without harsh contrasts

LOOK 3: For the Photocall, she went the casual Delpozo route with a red crop top. The poppy crop top with fun geometric shapes was perfectly paired with high waisted tailored crisp navy pants. Red Roger Vivier open-toe heels completed her fresh mid-afternoon look.

LOOK 4: Looking drop dead effing statuesque, the australian diva with probably her best look to date, outdid her self. At the Chopard private party, she wore Giorgio Armani Privé short-sleeved turquoise silk jacquard organza long dress with an intricate geometric design fully embroidered with Swarovski crystals. Looking jaw droppingly FUCKIN A-MAZING, this was a match made in fashion heaven. She was flawless. Can’t get any better than this

LOOK 5: Wearing Givenchy Fall 2014 gown, Cate attended the premiere of How to train your Dragon 2. The ensemble included an embellished multi-coloured bodice, sheer illusion back and black pleated skirt. While the look fell short of amazing-ness that I had her witness, I was on the fence with this look. I like the bodice, the embellishment is so intricate upon closer inspection, but the whole styling am not really sold on.

 

 

STARLET SONAM: Ever since her first appearace, Sonam Kapoor has always managed to impress with her red carpet appearances at Cannes. The young Starlet hardly ever has a misstep and in a short span, unlike Ashwariya who learnt it through the hard way, have managed to be the one to watch out for on the red carpet. The young Loreal ambassador is known for her youthful and contemporary spin on vintage vibed look that makes it all the more interesting since she was one of the few who people were waiting for. With her sister, Rhea as her stylist, she definitely did not disappoint striking gold everytime she made that appearance on the red carpet.

LOOK1: This time around many people at Cannes chose black for the drama and one of the enthralling ones was Sonam Kapoor in the voluminous Elie Saab couture gown, at one of the premiers. Working her magic, Old Hollywood style, the hair styled in vintage faux bob and statement red lips brought in the perfect dose of vintage on the red carpet. Accompanied by Chopard jewels, the look was pretty much perfection from head to toe

LOOK 2: Going the contemporary Indian way, she went for her go-to designer Anamika Khanna for the Foxcatcher premiere. Going the Monochromatic look in the stylistic contemporary twist on sari inspired ensemble, Sonam went for a matching blush stappy heels and clutch. Finishing off the flawless look with a choker-neckpiece hybrid from her mom Sunita Kapoor’s collection, the lass made heads turn for all the right reasons.

LOOK 3: For her final appearance, Sonam went the romantic way at the Chopard Dinner. In a powder blue strapless gown from Elie Saab Couture, Sonam looked effortlessly sexy chic.  A structured bodice with cascades of sumptuous silk falling from the waist, created an ethereal statement. Pairing her look with Chopard necklace, she rounded off the look with a gold clutch, slick ponytail and smoky eyes.

 

THE GOSSIPPY ONE: The newly appointed L’Oreal brand Ambassador, Blake lively made three appearances of which two made it to my list. The bling Chanel was just way off in proportions. Making her debut and fulfilling her duties, the brand certainly would benefit from her presence primarily because of two reasons 1) she had two killer days on red carpet 2) coz of her beau attending his movie premiere she most definitely was up for the power couple spot… a couple always grabs more attention than a single woman unless you are Aishwariya Rai.

LOOK 1: For her debut appearance, Ms. Lively kept things simple in a Gucci Premiere gown chiffon pleated paneled gown. Though nothing dramatic or punchy as I would like it to be, the gown still made for a chic outing on her part. The two-tone bordeaux silk-chiffon fully pleated gown featured a geometric neckline, open back, fitted bodice and high side slit that showcased her gold Casadei sandals. Opting for a messy high braided ponytail, she finished her look with with smouldering eye makeup and rose-gold and ruby Lorraine Schwartz diamond vine earrings and bracelet. Elegant, chic and young.

Look 2: In another Gucci Premiere, the gossip girl actress brought her A game with the amount of drama the festival demands. The black and white look with its silk crepe fifties-inspired strapless gown featuring a full skirt and a dramatic train was an immediate favorite. Perfectly complimenting her beau, Ryan Renolds, they looked like a classic Hollywood couple (hopefully they last that long too). The woman wore over 180 cts in Lorraine Schwartz diamonds including 20 ct diamond studs, two diamond necklaces, a natural pearl and unheated ruby and diamond bracelet and her own Lorraine Schwartz pink diamond engagement ring. phew! the gurl sure loves her diamonds

LOOK 3: the Chanel sequined frock look was a false note in Ms. Lively’s Cannes run. The 90s pakistani girls styled stole, the odd proportions of the frock itself and her hair were all a mess which she couldn’t save despite her best efforts. Putting her hands in pockets made matters worse with the look going all odd and looking like least bit thought out.

 

IN YOUR FACE BITCHES : Ever since Aishwarya Rai Bachhan had a baby, she has been under the radar for not losing her post baby fat, However in the past year, a noteable difference in Ms. Rai’s appearance had been there. Even though critics were after her life to lose all that, she took her own sweet time and lost it all on her own terms. The Results were that she had the last laugh and the most beautiful woman on earth, as she is referred to, made thunderous waves on the red carpet during her Cannes outing. She blew everyone away and silenced her critics by her choices. Who would say, she doesn’t even have her own stylist, the gowns were handpicked by her. Man! she’s totally worth it 😉

LOOK 1: For her first Day Ash made an appearance in a gold encrusted Roberto Cavalli strapless gown. Arriving in her full glory, the beaded gown made for an enthralling entrance for the beauty of Bollywood. The drop-dead gorgeous gold-embellished creation was cut to flatter Aishwarya’s stunning figure, hugging her curves in all the right places. The diva, losing all that post baby fat and giving a kiss to her critics with the pop of red in her look, the actress definitely would have said to them…IN YOUR FACE BITCHES. The gown brought the level of drama the festival demands and she delivered in more ways than one. The woman with her tumbling tresses look FUCKIN GORGE.. needless to say blew everyone out of the water

LOOK 2: For Day 2 was another Roberto Cavalli gown, white with silver embellishments which made Ash look slimmer than usual (or was all the weight lost). The gown and look though not as dramatic as day one was elegant and pretty. Opting for subdued makeup, Ash went for a flawless sunkissed look with hair settled in tresses. Though am not her fan, she actually looked like she had aged backwards with all that weightloss and especially due to makeup for this look. A pair of Chopard earrings completed her look

LOOK 3: Knocking it out for third time in a row, Ash stunned at the amFAR gala in Armani Privé. The blush, layered Fall 2013 gown with graduated crystal details,  was styled with a matching clutch and Chopard jewels. The stunning look was off set by the bold red lips giving the hostess the perfect glam and tribute to Marilyn Monroe (the gala was themed in her honor). While her color palatte may have been safe, there is no denying she definitely had an amazing run at Cannes

 

PRETTY PAZ:  Paz Vega was another one who had quite a few hits on the red carpet. She had delightful red carpet run with streamlined silhouettes, clean lines that flattered her body structure. The minimal sleek and polished look suited her to a T and brownie points to Ms Vega for keeping it all chic and controlled.

LOOK 1: In Zuhair Murad, she did her first photocall for the festival. The cheery blue dress with lace inserts was offsetted brilliantly by magenta satin heels. What was fun were the beach wave hair that were perfect for the cannes setting and framed her face well.

LOOK 2: For the Art of Elysium’s 6th Annual PARADIS at Villa St. George in Cannes, Paz looked simply stunning in a Salvatore Ferragamo blush long sleeve dress with sheer panels. Pairing it up wih blush lace-up pointed toe Ferragamo heels brought in the whole dainty vibe without overdoing it. A chic up-do, berry lip shade and sparkling jewels rounded off this elegant and uber feminine look. Loved every bit of it.

LOOK 3: Fierce is all that comes to my mind when I see this look of hers for Swarovski and Viktor & Rolf party.Wearing a navy and black Pamella Roland Fall 2014 dress with sheer panelling and sleeves, the form-fitting silhouette oozed sassiness. To credit Ms. Vega who makes this length work and working the hell out of it (a difficult length to work it, the reason her elie saab look is not here). Paz’s side-sweeping hair and soft smoky eye give just the right amount of attitude needed for this look. A pair of Christian Louboutin pumps, an embellished clutch and layered rings added pizzazz to this polished and uber sultry look. Her best look of them all. LOVE

LOOK 4: Wearing a Ralph & Russo 2014 embellished couture gown, Ms Vega brought forth the drama in her own way onto the red carpet. With a big rose detail on the shoulder that cascaded down the bodice, she kept the look simple to let the gown shine. A simple updo and Chopard ball drop earrings completed her glamorous outing.

LOOK 5: The Fitriani Couture gown is breath-taking and Ms. Vega is owning every inch of it. Opting for black (what is with these women this year), the ensemble featured a plunging neckline, the sculpted hips (yes leaner framed people can sport it and work it) and a dramatic train, the spanish actress cut an interesting picture at the amFAR red carpet outing . Accented with a gold waistband, she completed her look with a slick bun and Bulgari jewels

AT Lost River’s Photocall, Ryan Gosling kept it cool while professional in a blue button down shirt paired with brown trousers and boots. Simple and effective and just how women like him. For the premiere he opted for a more classic ensemble and look good in his sharp Gucci Made to Order navy grosgrain shawl lapel one button Marseille tuxedo styled with a white shirt and Gucci black patent leather shoes. Making the look standout amongst all was the absence of the bowtie one which was a welcoming formal change.

While for his photocall look, British actor Matt smith went for a laid back look. Combining a cool-blue shirt, checked blazer and navy trousers courtesy of Thom Sweeney, he cut a rather cool picture. Brownie points for perfectly rounding off the look with navy blue loafers. For the premiere, the ex- Dr. Who star went for a classic three piece suit (need to make one for myself) by the same designer. I was waiting for someone to do a blue suit but a three piece complimented perfectly with dark brown shoes …aaahh. The suit with peak lapels was the perfect hue of blue that was urban and conservative at the same time. With the white shirt, he brought in the knit tie into formal attire, with effortless ease accenting it with a tie pin. LOVED everything about this look.. complimenting shoes..check, breaking bit of rules check..

Menswear-21
In Burberry tailoring, James McAvoy cut a classic relaxed gentleman picture at the photocall of his movie. Striking the perfect balance of refined and relaxed, he cut a dapper picture in a navy three piece suit pairing it up with a white shirt and black shoes.

While Blake Lively had a pretty good run, her beau, Ryan Reynolds wasn’t far behind. For the premiere of his movie, he went for a Gucci black satin peak lapel one-button Signoria tuxedo with a white evening shirt, white satin bowtie, black silk cummerbund and white leather laceups. I rarely see men embracing cummerbund (saw quite a bit at MET though) and when I do it is fun to see how understatedly classic yet fun alternate to vest this is.

Christian Baez picks out his best menswear looks from the Cannes Film Festival

James Franco: It seems as though this handsome dapper knows how to pick out the right fashion executions- or must have a pretty smart stylist. His blue Gucci suit welcomed the sunny weather, with perfect summery pant lapels that gave a relaxed aura. I would normally opt for a more slimming and tailored look, but I can see how this look works for an event like Cannes! James’ black Gucci suit asked for a more sophisticated and groomed look, something his people did almost well. The navy tie only complements his entire blue color wheel. My only objection with both looks have to do with his personal grooming. A nice shave (and maybe a comb) wouldn’t have hurt.

Zachary Quinto: Something about this entire look speaks European Avant Garde- and I like it! Though oversized jackets are not really a personal favorite, we can trust McQueen to work his (well, her) magic and make us believe that they are the only thing right in this world. Zachary brings sophistication and a sense of mystery with this look. Loving the big lapels and shiny bowtie!

Adrien Brody: Can people ever get enough of this man?!? Though he’s probably one of the best actors (and most overlooked) Hollywood has at the moment, Adrien brings in an androgynous take on his fashion statements. His Burberry Prorsum tuxedo might seem like most tuxedos we see on any Red Carpet affair, but this one speaks to us in a whole other language! The entire suit runs smooth in texture, with detailed shiny texture on the lapels and around the pockets.

Thom Browne: Though I was rooting for this man to take home this year’s CFDA award for Menswear Designer of the Year, there is no doubt about this man’s brilliant and quite obnoxious designs. What I like about this look is the asymmetry this whole look brings! Implementing formal shorts on a suit adds an intriguing juxtaposition, reminding me of Scottish men in kilts- to which I can only endorse! The entire look transforms Thom to a reckless preppy stud, hence the detail on that vest!

Tom Hiddleston: One thing that stands true, is that gingers can have a trick or two up their sleeves! Tom brought color and life to Cannes in a breezy and quite sexy McQueen suit! Pulling off a monochromatic look isn’t as simple as it sounds, and yet this man makes it look so easy breezy! The only reason this look works for him is because, well, of his pigmentation. What really made this look for me was the unbuttoned dress shirt, adding more character to the ensemble! Most men would add a relaxed tie to the shirt, but that only ends up looking tacky and quite unappealing.

The Subtle run of Carey Mulligan continued on from her MET gala appearance. Sticking to her minimal approach through her Cannes run, of her five appearances my preferences were:
The Great Gatsby Photocall: She wore her second Balenciaga in a row. A very chic black jumpsuit featuring a circular beaded bodice with a bow accent and unusual circular neckline (one of my favs from the collection) , which she styled with Saint Laurent t-bar pumps. Accessorizing with kohl rimmed eyes, neutral lips and simple chignon, she looked every OH SO CHIC.
The Inside Llewyn Davis Photocall: The Chloe dress with a military vibe from Fall 2013 collection was just perfect on Mulligan. Simple, minimal and chic, it was right up her alley. I am beginning to sense she is fast on the track of becoming my fav in terms of style and her approach towards looks. Opting for black again, she paired up black Louboutin peep-toes with the A line dress. The hair was styled as a parted chignon and barely-there-makeup (someone seems to have found their signature look)
The Inside Llewyn Davis Premiere: Outshining everyone, even mr. Timberlake at the premiere was this petite actress in black and white Vionett gown. A simple and effective take on the black and white trend, Carey Mulligan looks flawles. The knotted chingnon is probably one of the most innovate takes on the hairstyle and the simple natural makeup completes her look. The black and white gown with V slit was definitely a winner on the red carpet. She paired the look with her Brian Atwood heels.

The Un-Certain regard section judge was spotted at almost everyday on the red carpet. Giving us quite a few different looks, she managed to stir up and have people sit up and take notice of her.
The Jury Photocall: Wearing a Giambattista Valli Spring 2013 Couture dress, Zhang Zi attended the jury photocall on Day2. Featuring a sheer top and colourful patterned structured skirt with green embroidered leaf details, she looked pretty. Completing her look with a loosely teased bun and yellow loubs, she presented a perfect summer color combo and look.
The Opening Ceremony: For the opening ceremony, Zhang ziyi chose to go against the grain, while wearing a look from the Christian Dior Fall 2012 Couture collection. Going the edgy route, her pixie hair (thats a wig) went perfectly with the navy and fuschia top paired with back pants. A navy satin clutch and Christian Louboutin ‘Pivichic’ pumps completed her look.
The Bling Ring premiere: Going for a Fall 2012 gown by Carolina Herrera, Zhang Zi surely made head turns with this edgy outing. The black-and-silver brushstroke print gown was paired with a chunky necklace. She swept her hair back into a sleek updo with a Jimmy Choo clutch providing the finishing touches to her look.
La-Venus-a-La-Fourrure- premirere: The actress sported, looking heavenly, in an embellished Elie Saab Couture. The breathtaking lilac fully embellished gown with three-quarter length sleeves was accented with a tonal leather belt. Utilizing the pockets, she opted to skip the clutch.She completed her look with Boucheron jewels and an Omega watch. Quite the pretty princess-sy moment.
Only God Forgives Premiere: Opting for a gown from Chanel from the Fall 2009 collection, Zhang Ziyi walked down the red carpet, looking flawlessly. The strapless gold and black sequined gown, looked every bit red carpet worthy. The only problem I had was with the organza train that looked more like a tail rather than part of the gown.Accessorizing her look with Chanel Joallierie jewels, a Ferragamo ‘Faberge’ egg clutch and Jimmy Choo black peep-toes, she completed it off with a simple bun.

Hits and Misses Ash

Aishwarya Rai has been a regular on the Cannes Red carpet quite a while now. While the younger lot has much more of a firmer grasp on the red carpet fashion, Ash has fumbled, stumbled and learned it the hard way.

And that we saw on the first day itself. Throughout her Cannes journey there were two looks that stood out. One obviously being the Elie Saab gown, which showed off that this woman is back in the game and gave us hope that the rest of the appearances would be as good. The grey Elie saab (a fav of hers ), former Miss world rocked it and How.

The less said about the Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla anarkali, the better. The heavy hair and the white anarkali… not working

The Gucci Satin gown was not the perfect gown for her third outing, but anything better than that anarkali. While the gown itself was pretty, the one shoulder gown highlighted some facts that she still needed to hit the gym. While the pink lips were a pretty accent, thats where it all ended. The beehive updo was too harsh and contrasting in terms of its character for the gown that she was sporting.

For her final outing at amFAR she opted for a Tarun Talihani gold sari. While it made sense for her to do an updo(much better this time) since it was a collared blouse, it was too much gold. Gold sari, gold blouse, gold clutch, gold jewellery…Darling! u took the description being ‘glitterati’ event too literally.

Photocall: while she looked good in the YSL button down and Zac posen skirt (look similar to model on red carpet) , it had me wishing, she should have opted for a pencil skirt instead for a fuss free look.

The Cannes Red Carpet Queens

Look 1: Now on the first day itself, Nicole Kidman set a pretty high precendent for herlsef as she arrived at the Hotel Martinez for lunch with jury members. Arriving in a Dior knee-length black sequin cocktail dress, Nicole Kidman attended the jury dinner. Perfect for a woman, who understands her body type and height, the dress fit Kidman to a T.  The Hours actress looked every bit statuesque. Trust Kidman to keep things interesting by pairing the dress with with ankle strapped black satin Dior pumps.  Cathy Waterman jewels and a Dior clutch completed her look.

Look 2: For the Jury Photocall, Nicole opted for a long dress from McQueen’s fall 2013 collection in black. The bubble cuff n fitted sleeves complimented the chic shape of the dress. The bit of color came in via her berry red shoes. While she got quite a bit of flak for this hair style, I quite like the laid back off centre parted hair with side small bun held in place with a black ribbon. It was casual and fuss free.

Look 3: For the opening night and the Gatsby premiere, Kidman chose a bell- silhouetted frock from Christian Dior’s Spring 2013 couture with a cutout lace bustier and flourscent embroidery. Now lets be honest! I did not like it on her when I saw this on her first, primarily because of the fact its above floor length reduces her height visually, but the more I look at it, the dress, with those coral heels, and the high headed ponytail, the more it grew on me and by the end of it, she looked pretty good.

Look 4: Nicole Kidman chose a black leather Calvin Klien dress to attend CK party. While she looks nice neck up, I dont quite find the ankle length on this one very flattering on the leggy lass. The black on black shoes were safe considering it was Nicole Kidman we are discussing here

Look 5: Just when I thought she had disappeared, Mrs. Kidman makes an appearance with her husband on the red carpet in an off shoulder printed L’wren scott gown. The unusual choice of the blue print was a fierce one which she pulled off remarkably. The Side hair were tamed and clipped creating a sort of middle puff which then concluded into a side swept hair. Kidman looked flawless. No wonder Keith Urban was so smitten that they got intimate on the red carpet

Look 6: One woman’s loss is another woman’s treasure. The Valentino couture gown that was suppose to make its debut on Anne Hathaway during her Oscar run, did not make the cut due to similarities with Amanda Seyfried. Guess Nicole took it up and rocked the hell out of it at the Nebaraska premiere. With soft parted hair done up in a soft bun and sun kissed makeup, this Queen of red carpet, pulled the whole of this lace cutout layered gown with the required poise and grace and how.

Look 7: A minor fashion misstep given that she has had such a fun run at Cannes.  Selecting a look from the Chanel Resort 2014 collection, Kidman’s this appearance in the ruffled hem, sequin dress was bit lackluster compared to the rest of her outings. While red Christian Louboutin ‘Decollete 554′ pumps really enhance the look, its the hair thats the undoing for me in this look. a rolled, braided messy updo and Fred Leighton black enamel and gold cuff bracelets provided the finishing touches

Look 8: For the amFAR gala, Nicole Kidman opted for an embellished black off shoulder dress with her hair tamed into a neat tamed 50’s bob. Pairing it up with off white heels, Nicole gave off  a very Dita Von Teese vibe in her this look. The look was not too bad, but wasn’t anything home to write about either

Look 9: She definitely saved the best for the last. Exuding the Grace Kelly (for which she is shooting), Mrs Kidman looked regal wearing a Giorgio Armani custom made bustier white silk cady gown with a v-neckline and gold Swarovski crystal bow detail sweeping across the bodice, which she styled with Harry Winston jewels. I really like curly hair rolled up in a bun with a matted effect. LOVE

Look1: Marking her first appearance at Cannes, Jessica Chastain appeared wearing a Versace Collection gown at Cleopatra premiere. Giving a preview of upcoming Versace collection, Chastain appeared in a long-sleeved off-white silk gown, featuring a cape which trailed behind her into a train. The look was styled with a stunning sapphire sautoir and the trombino sapphire ring from the Elizabeth Taylor Bulgari collection, supposedly worn by Elizabeth Taylor herself. The side swept red locks in waves were done in waves gave a regal aristocratic vibe to the whole look.

Look 2: the much more relaxed look at the Cleopatra cocktail party, Jessica Chastain wore Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci Spring 2014 crepe-de-chine gown with satin cut-outs and a plunging neckline. The hair done up in a relaxed do, the jewellery was minimal and was only an emerald green ring against her white gown.

Look 3: Opting for Givenchy couture purple colored embellished gown, Jessica Chastain made her third appearance at Cannes. Now being a Pakistani and growing up on bling, this one was not something I could digest and liked. The elaborately embellished gown was too much of an OTT and wasnt a pretty sight on the actress on the red carpet for me. And that purple, had it been a darker one going towards plum, would have been a good couture dramatic. As much as I like Ricardo Tisci this one look pretty garish.

Look4: The actress redeemed herself the next day itself in a Saint Laurent Paris cutout gown. The asymmetrical gown with a cut-out detail is yet another elegant look from the actress. The fiery red gown styled with wavy tresses was as perfect as as look could go. The only bling that came in via the serpent bracelet was chic and just enough minimal bling for the fierce look the actress sported. LOVE

Simply put … Nandita Das

Well there was another jury member too from India and that too for short films. It was none other than Nandita Das. Nandita is not new to the Cannes judging table, but the fiesty actress and director refuses to be led by uncomfortable choices and glams it up with what she feels she is comfortable in, and in a simple way definitely makes a splash without much of an additional ‘designer’ tag.

Nandita comes across as a self assured individual and that comes across in her wardrobe choices too. Comprising mostly of handwoven Saris, my fav has to be the yellow one she wore at the closing ceremony. She looked resplendant in the yellow color. A brilliant choice for her, she carries it off as much elan as Sonam did the gown. The side swept hair and gold accessories finshed up her look. I really like how she pulls of her earthy choices with equal glam and no fuss compared to others who attended the festival and faltered at one point or other. She just stuck to her guns and made sure that its a film festival.

Even for her lunches, Nandita went the casual route with denim and kurti with a handwoven scarf thrown in. LOVE iT

Sonam ‘Nose’ how to pull it off

The Fashionista Sonam Kapoor is, all eyes were awaiting what would this petite lass sport on the red carpet of one of the most esteemed film festivals. Always a sight on the red carpet, Sonam has had some pretty fashionable moments on the red carpet of Cannes (remember Jean Paul Gaultier) and this year promised to be no different. The Loreal ambassaderess had to fulfill her duties therefore we saw quite a bit of her alas just not much!

Look 1: Sonam arrived at Hotel Martinez for her duties in a Huemm grey jumpsuit/sari hybrid. The grey and black played pretty well against each other. The full sleeved blouse and the sari/jumpsuit was paired with jewellery from her mother, Suita Kapoor’s collection. The extra long earings were pretty, but for me did not work much in terms of length. She finished it off with a slick ponytail and kolhapuris.

Look 2: Now that was one look that had everyone talking. For the premiere of the Great Gatsby, Sonam paired an Anamika Khanna Sari with a long sleeved embellished jacket that trailed behind her. The handworked embellished jacket brought the Jazzy element served via India, though i did feel that the sleeves could have been a better fit. She definitely did a better job on the jacket-sari combo than Ashwariya last year. Her hair were toussled up in a loose bun, but it was the oversized kundan nath (nose ring) that brought all the attention and the drama. Many hated and criticized her for it but where would you bring up the drama if not Cannes. Though I do think the size could have gone one segment smaller, but not more than that. The oxblood lips, the cat-eye winged makeup and that nosering were the perfect glamour combo that put India right under spotlight. Full marks to her. Loreal would be one happy brand that Sonam definitely nose how to pull it off (pun totally intended)

Look 3: After Anamika Khanna, Sonam changed into an Elie Saab for the Cannes dinner, which by the way was a spread of four course meal, made by the best of chefs. The red Elie Saab (which would also be worn by Dita Von Teese later during the festival) looked pretty good on her. Changing her hair to a slick back look and pair up with matchy accessories, Sonam finished up this look. Because of the sheer and opaque-ness of the dress, the matchy accessories for me this time around felt just right for this look.

Look 4: Woah! that was all one could say when Sonam walked down the red carpet of Jeune & Jolie. She turned heads when she walked down in a custom made and designed Dolce and Gabbanna gown. The big and bold floral printed ballgown with a perfectly fitted corset, made sonam a perfect cynosure on the red carpet. The gown thankfully ended a few inches above ground giving a twist to the usual ball gown. The side swept glossy hair and minimal jewels, were just enough to let the gown shine on its own. With matching pumps, Sonam made sure she is the new princess of Cannes.

Look 5: For her Chopard dinner outing, she opted for a grey and black Shehla lehnga. Not too impressive through this turnout of hers and her good run came to an end. While she looked good neck up the plot was lost amongst the cape, the off shoulder choli and layered lehenga. A blog sort of rightfully commented that it looked like ‘A wealthy-young-Sicilian-widow-still-in-mourning-forced-to-attend-a-gala-to-snare-her-next-husband’ , failing to strike any chord.

Vidya Balan at Cannes

Look 1: Joining the esteemed jury of Cannes Film festival this year was Vidya Balan. With the help of friend and designer Sabyasachi, who made sure that whatever he represents of the country has to be cultural and about fabric rather than bling bling, Vidya put forth her best foot forward at the Jury lunch arriving at the Martinez Hotel. The simplistc maroon lehenga with a minimally embellished blouse gives all the limelight to the textural khaadi which one can spot on vidya. Carrying the understated look with ease, she attracted the paparazzi. The Maroon lehnga and full sleeved blouse were paired with a black embroidered dupatta which nicely offsetted with it. Finishing off with a watch, jhumkis from The House of Surana and a potli bag, Vidya Balan surely worked that outfit. The middle parting and braid were the perfect hair for this look which she pulled off with aplomb.

Look 2: For the Jury Photocall, the actress went a very indian aristocratic look. With her hair tied in a bun, Vidya opted for a white handwoven Sari with a gold border from Sabyasachi’s Save the Sari campaign. The actress paired the sari with a black high neck full sleeved chiffon blouse with leaf motifs hand emroidered on shoulders and a buttoned down straight at the back. She completed her look in a severe mid parted hair and a neat bun. She rounded off her look with a chanel clutch, gold earings, string beads and a watch. Blowing off everyone that shes monotonous, the second look was experimental while within her comfort zone

Look 3: Now this is where she faltered. With the kind of body structure Vidya has, draping of the dopatta combined with the blush pink lehenga, made her look stocky and short. The blouse consisted of a black bodice with white embroidered sleeves. Though the jewellery was the kind of a timeless piece created exclusively for her by Amarapali, it did not help her much in salvaging the look. Looked like this wasn’t a night for Indians to shine on the red carpet since Mr. Bachchan faltered too (more on that later), making Sonam Kapoor the only Indian saving grace on the red carpet

Look 4: Redeeming herself the next day itself, Vidya attended the Juene and Jolie Premiere in a matt gold/beige sari with a gold and squined borders, paired with maroon full sleeved and high neck (again) blouse with embroidered sleeves. Her hair were styled into a severe mid parting and finished off with a bun. However it was her nath (nose ring) that garnered all the attention. After Sonam Kapoor, Vidya too decided to sport this major micro trend on the red carpet. The traditional nath gelled in well with her other gold accessories, and those sapphire beads provided the perfect pop of color breaking the earthy monotony of the ensemble. Carrying the embroidered potli bag, Vidya looked at ease with this look.

Look 5: Hopping between the premieres of Bombay talkies and Inside Llewyn Davis was Vidya Balan in probably one of my fav looks of her in her Cannes run. The Mehndi/olive colored handwoven tusser silk Sari with a bright pallu was right up her alley. Paired with a round neck ,giving a breathing space in the whole ensemble, full sleeved maroon blouse, Vidya’s hair changed too, to a much more looser and relaxed bun. Finishing up with a potli bag and just oversized earings without the necklace was a very wise move that worked in her favor as the makeup too was good on this day and worked brilliantly.

Look 6: Channelling her inner Gayatri Devi look, Vidya came the closest to the legend (she could now officially play the biopic :P) in this floral printed red Sari with and embroidered border. Red is usually not a good color with the fear one might blend into the red carpet, however she pulls this one off. Accessorizing her look with a watch, pearl strings, pearl drop earings and a chanel clutch, Vidya looked very much the inspiration Sabyasachi had. However it was the hair that was a sort of downer here. The loose upped bun aged the actress far more than her years.

Look 7: Vidya definitely did not finish off with much bang ( I personally wanted her to go for that fierce green lehenga that I saw in the preview Vogue did of her outfits at Cannes). However having said that she did a pretty impressive job at the closing ceremony. Probably the best hair during her run was this one. The side lock and loosely done braid was the perfect look for this two colored floor length anarkali. Wearing the black collared and full sleeved embroidered anarkali in black and olive/grey, Vidya added the glam via the matt gold sequined dopatta that she draped casually over her arms. Accessorizing the look with jhumkis and embroidered Sabyasachi purse, Vidya bid adieu to her jury duties

Lunch Looks: During Cannes I also saw Vidya in three looks (cant find the third picture), where in the jury spends time together and basically hangs out, chills and enjoys the perks. For this Vidya once went for a white cotton sari with black blouse, A maroon print sari with a maroon blouse and a red kurta that she paired with black elephant pants. She kept these looks sans jewellery and sometimes sans makeup too (all that dressing up would take a toll on anyone)

She had more hits than misses and definitely did not reduce the sari to a costume rather elevated it to be just a regular garment that had potiential to be as casual or formal depending on the occassion.
