Films in Fashion – 2016 – Bollywood edition

header
It is that time of the year that we look back on the past year to see who made an impact on fashion, who set trends and who aced it in terms of costumes in movies in Bollywood. From fabulously styled to chameleon character looks transforming the actors, this year Bollywood dabbled in both regional and contemporary themes with its costumes within movies. From looking fab to getting down and dirty, the hindi movies explored it all in a range of movies. While there were many like Neerja and Dangal where the costume meshed so well with the character that you hardly notice it (the best thing a costume designer Read the rest of this entry »

For starters, I just fail to understand what will it take for designers to understand that winter festive does not necessarily means clothes for wedding or a bridals to be sent down the runway (you have a bridal fashion week for that). Yes, it is the upcoming ‘wedding season’ and people attending will want clothes but atleast give some worthwhile options… Festive does not have to mean you do the same old work in floral filgree over and over again – There quite a few that missed the ball altogether, others presenting rather meh collections and few managing to hit the right balance between wedding attendees and festive look. The collections that actually made themselves noticeable Read the rest of this entry »

This fashion week also saw quite a few designers display a much more chic approach towards fashion. One that could be styled however one like and be on top of their style game, channeling their inner polished Victoria Beckham

ANOMALY
While there was nothing abnormal about Anomaly’s presentation, the collection was pretty commercial and very retail friendly in its outlook. Minimal in its outlook and clean lines and a polished silhouette, the collection was simple Read the rest of this entry »

There is always a group of people who’s collections are awaited with bated breath – with a few hits and misses, they hit out the ball park every time and are already and in the process of becoming veterans of the fashion houses they lead. They set trends, bring forth something afresh to the runway with experimenting within their signature aesthetic.

MASABA GUPTA
The face of quirkyness and spearheading that in India, Masaba has mastered that art and successfully transitioned it into a business that has likes of people from many facets sporting her designs. International in aesthetic and quirky in language, Masaba presented the usual with the unusual playing up with proportions, scale and Read the rest of this entry »

Weave Magic

One of the most fun things that I as a textile designer and a fashion designer get to see at Indian fashion weeks is a designers from India do well is the exploration of cotton based hand weaves and handloomed fabrics, something the Pakistani counterparts need to learn. While one may see Maheen Khan venture into Banarsi fabric and running brilliantly with it, the examples are few and far in between. At AIFW fashion week, one got to see an array of designers exploring organic cotton weaves and playing them into different aesthetics

IKAI by Ragini Ahuja
Using Mesopotamia as her starting point, Ragini Ahuja made smart choices keeping it urban and chic with simple silhouettes. Sheer overlays and jackets with Mesopotamian art were smart. In rich autumnal and earthy tones Read the rest of this entry »

Day 2 – MBFW 16

The second day did manage to hit quite the mark on the resort vibe with something that we are familiar of the season. Relaxed outings to some body con dresses ending with Dion Lee’s impressive presentation. From important business decisions to commercial concepts to evolutions, Day 2 was pretty interesting and safe at the same time to say the least…

THE RESORT-FUL GINGER AND SMART
With their latest collection, the sisters Alexandra and Genevieve Smart prove that no one knows their clientele better than them. Their collection of monochrome and champange punctuated with blues and prints, was laced with fringes, sheer and slinky layers. Fashion Pakistan Week 2016 – Picks

I know I know I am late on this one, but better late than never right!! LIFE  does get in the way and did I mention, I graduated and officially a Masters (you probably know that if you follow me on instagram 😛 )

While not averse to the idea of two fashion weeks, a full fledged and succinct fashion week with 5 days for all designers over the country would make much more sense, but I will not get into the politics of fashion, all I’ll say is that it is the case over all the world so Pakistan fashion industry going through it is no anomaly. The Fashion Pakistan Week that took place in Karachi showcased a multitude of designers showcasing their collections. From them, here are my picks:

day1

It is always an exciting time when fashion week and presentations happen back home. PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week is one such occasion that is marked on my calendar weeks ahead and boy am I having a blast going through the collections. While I am not watching it live! time difference from back home and work commitments, I do miss out meeting colleagues, fellow bloggers and designers. It is always exciting to see what the designers have been working on and being a designer myself, it becomes second nature to see what is going on. Day 1 at the fashion week, like usual, came with its share of hits and misses
