Mercedes-Benz Fashion week is one of the major event the city of Sydney looks forward to. Apart from the usual fervor of streetstyle which is definitely a separate post on it’s own – keep watching this space for it, the week showcased collections by designers many of who opting for a much more commercial route and played it safe- which makes sense for the business – but come on it’s a runway presentation so there were quite a few who definitely stepped up balancing that line of creative and commercial.
The Award season just went by and by the time it culminates at Oscars, one pretty much has a good idea of how celebrities are going to dress and the style they would choose to follow. Oscars brought in drama but a lot of it was rather littered with conventional choices. However a lot of actresses did manage to turn heads for all the right reasons on the red carpet. The red carpet for Emmys this season had a Mindy makeover with so many of the celebs opting for some wonderful colors rocking every bit of it
Girlfriend knew exactly what to do with the gown, and the actress nailed it twirling around the night in her red Jason Wu chiffon number. With slick back hair and red lips, Ms Chopra was just pitch perfect in that gown. And let us just take a moment on that stage, Read the rest of this entry »
Prepping for Red carpets are no mean feat, some play it safe, classic and minimal, others love to experiment on a whole different level, sometimes leaving people surprised that it could work. This award season was no different where we had our range of celebs dressed to the nines for the big awards night few days after each other, appearing flawless despite making transatlantic journeys. Here’s a rundown of the few of their own red carpet looks.

For a fashion awards night it was ironic as to how many usually-well-turned-up-on-red-carpet people, had quite the opposite effect. Many turned heads on the red carpet and not for the right reasons failing to impress anyone that saw them, and here I thought Black was the most safest color. From capes on dresses to odd ( and not the good kind) dresses and gowns it was pretty much a catastrophe. While the British Fashion Awards 2015 in partnership with Swarovski did miss last year’s sass, however not everyone was a lost cause and some of the red carpet appearances did kick some serious ass!! My highlight of the night: Jonathan Anderson winning both Menswear and Womenswear designer for 2015.

Primarily a film festival, and it should be respected as such, Cannes in the past few years has notoriously become one of the highlight in the annual calendar due to its glitzy red carpet. Hwever, Cannes this time around was rather a less dramatic affair…. what is with red carpet events this year… however regular fashionistas gave us moments that were definitely worth watching what they would wear next on the red carpet. From Sonam Kapoor to Julianne Moore… even Katrina Kaif made her debut at the red carpet at this edition of Cannes. There were some fun brilliant moments and some missteps but our fashionistas did their best and rocked every thing they donned…. Read the rest of this entry »
Many of the men actually proved that men have it easier than women on the big Oscar Red Carpet. While Chris Pratt shone in a Tom ford giving hope to all medium built men (take notes, its all in the good fit for a classic suit), Steve Carell was bespectacled … literally. While Common’s suit was a bit too snug, Redmayne and Elgort looked like twins in matching suits (and the looked good), Adrian Brody moving around looking like a waiter and Jared Leto was classic Jared Leto wanting to be different… but while I was undecided on it (still hasn’t grown on me he looked like a lilac love child of Katy Perry and Zoey Deschanel) , his outfit featuring in the LEGO song did put me a bit off. It was a pretty classic affair for men with some twists.
With an interesting burgundy choice for the red carpet, David Oyelowo might have lost out on the best actor nomination, but won over being one of the best dressed gentlemen on the red carpet. The DnG tux, with a deep neck vest and bow tie in similar color to match might feel a bit much too much for some, but Mr Oyelowo works the hell outta that suit without being overwhelmed. Offseting the look by a small brooch, the SELMA actor knows how and where to add in the perfect details.
A regular on the list, the Best winner of the night shone in a navy and black Alexander Mcqueen suit. Do I even need to say why is he on the list.
50 SHADES OF NEIL PATRICK HARRIS
While I hated his final look of blue velvet jacket with that big flower monstrosity (ewww), NPH had some pretty decent moments during the night. His black introductory suit on point perfectly classic and tailored. His burgundy jacket was fun contemporary and the whole look was a pitch perfect with black pants and shoes. But it was his red carpet grey suit that made everyone took up notice. The couple NPH-David Burtka was one of the best dressed couples on the red carpet, a masterclass of sorts on how couples should be. Him in his grey suit and David in an ivory dinner jacket and black pants look was on point Oscars. One doesn’t need to push in classics too much and hey its the Oscars night, be formal for once…if it ain’t broke, don’t overdo it.
The newly hitched Cumberbatch hit all the right notes with the ivory-white dinner jacket and shirt combo that Adrian Brody did not. The best actor nominee looked on point classic and cleaned up well for the ceremony. The shawl collar ivory jacket with black accessory details worked well for the ceremony. The brit who was against a fellow brit, was a strong contender might have lost out on the awards but was winner all the way on the red carpet.
There is something….scratch that….everything about a good fit of a tux that makes all the difference. Michael Keaton nails his take on the classic tux in a Ralph Lauren number that makes him look slick, smart and chic in every possible way. Reducing his age, the suit complete with a white pocket square was as classic as they come. A good fit people… A good fit… can’t stress how much that matters.
Having a twinsie moment with the best actor nominee, Ansel too picked a similar navy and black tux for the big awards night (probably his first). Navy has become this staple suit and tux formal pick for the intelligent man. The Fault in our stars actor’s Prada blue mohair, one-button tuxedo with a contrasting black silk shawl collar unlike Redmayne’s formal notch, kept the whole look age appropriate without going all too serious for the night. The black bowtie and shoes complimented the look perfectly. The star in the making made all the right moves so why pick one of the two navy red carpet strutters.
That gentlemen is what a well tailored tux can do for your body. Going the classic route in a Giorgio Armani black double-breasted peak-lapel tuxedo Chris Pine with his hair side parted and a stubble to boast looked every inch impeccable in a suit that could have gone overwhelmingly wrong. He looked slick, smart and sharp on the red carpet and definitely caught many eyes… now you know the reason why!!

It was rather surprisingly a lackluster affair at the Oscars this year. Women dressed way better at the Globes. While Jessica Chastain went a good jewel tone but the sad sash with embellished bodice maternity look and her fiery hair into tamed into straight school girl gone stepford housewife hair, What happened to you between Globes and Oscars??? Attempting a miss goody two shoes look??? Best Actress winner Julianne Moore disappointed in something that ‘Karl made for her’…. Woman … you should have stuck to Givenchy or Tom Ford… they gave you such memorable moments at Globes and SAG… the squashed sequined flowers rows was rather meh!! Almost the worst gown ever by a best actress winner….Even Cate Blanchette was just hanging around the outskirts looking bored and barely bringing in her red carpet game.
Jared Leto’s outfit was copied by the Lego singers and it wasn’t as awesome on them. Scarlet Johansson and Lupita Nyongo were in competition with each other for the role of the new sea witch… someone might as well cast them as two bad ass sea witches fighting off each other…who needs Ariel, its Sea Poison Ivy versus the Oyster Queen of Pearls (Lupita’s Vanity Fair Party Calvin Klein look was flawless) . Laura Dern‘s gown as much fun as it was, she did not need to ruin the whole look by that styling going all Game of Thrones and making it go all armoury.. Felicity Jones, almost had a moment…her Globes one still by far the best look for her this award season. Zoe Saldana, a little personality wouldn’t hurt, you had such a good gown with subtle graphic details. And what to say about Gwenyth Paltrow… why is she even invited to Oscars anymore… Darling they don’t hand out awards to trying-to-look-like-when-i- won.
Here are my picks for the best dressed women of the night.
After Naomi Watts at Globes, it was Jennifer Hudson’s turn to try on the cheery yellow color on the red carpet. The butter yellow gown from the Romona Keveza Spring 2015 collection with half peplum and tiny accent belt was classic chic, while the color adds a splash of fun to the simple silhouette. The bold emerald and diamond earrings and cocktail ring are a lovely accent, perfectly styling off the gown. Paired with Jimmy Choo ‘Minnie’ sandals she rounded off the look. Jennifer’s sleek hair, flawless skin and subtle makeup complete the look. She changed up with another smashing look with a black velvet gown, dangling earrings and deep magenta lips was as perfect for the night as the red carpet look. From cheery to sultry, this chic rocked it all.
The usual sultry siren on the red carpet went for a much more prettier and princessy moment for her big night at the Oscars. The Layers of romantic nude-hued tulle were speckled with monochromatic beading from the deep cut neckline, dripping all the way past the waistline. The look was styled to chicest perfection via the most slim belt, a matching clutch by Salvatore Ferragamo and simple diamond drop earrings. What was a masterstroke was the high ponytail that added the perfect contrasting playful element, balancing out the high drama dress. A pink pout and she was the princess of the night.
After Jessica Chastain’s unusual bronze choice at the Globes, it was Emma’s chartreuse pick made for the unusual perfect red carpet moment this Oscar season. The custom long-sleeved Elie Saab couture gown with illusion detailing, an open-back and chartreuse beading worked perfectly for the her skin tone accented off with her hair. Christian Louboutin ‘Gardnera’ sandals compliment the gown perfectly. The flawless look was finished with her wavy side swept bob and deeply pigmented coral matte lips were perfect accent and fun take on the red carpet.
If there was one dress that said ‘ delivered a baby and the bitch is back baby’, it had to be Rosamund’s Oscar red carpet moment. The crimson Givenchy Couture number created a visual spark on the red carpet with its dimensional, intricate embroidery sexily cinched in with a visible corset. What is intriguing about this look is its in sync with her nominated character as well as despite being embroidered overall, it does not overwhelm her. Finishing her sassy red carpet look, in minimal fashion—dainty Lorraine Schwartz earrings, alongside a swept-back bun and barely-there rose-tinged makeup were all she needed.
Chanelling her inner sultry boudoir, starlet Margot Robbie looked smoldering in Saint Laurent on the red carpet. Saint Laurent is becoming the go to designer for the young guns providing edgy elegant outlook. The subtly sexy Saint Laurent gown with a plunging neckline and sheer sleeves channeled her 70’s glam actress look. The Van Cleef & Arpels necklace featuring rows of diamonds, sapphires and a dramatic tassel was a perfect accent to the black draped gown. Styling the look to a T, flawless skin, a matte red lip, gorgeous brows and a slick blonde bob made her one of the best dressed ones.
Naomi Watts is one actress who is always noted for her sartorial choices on the red carpet. Decked in Armani Prive, the black, white and grey brick like embellished brick pattern was fresh in Naomi-esque manner. With halter neckline that had delicate straps and the black, beaded cutout along the sides of the gown was a modern and chic take on the cutout trend. Styling with oversized inky-blue and diamond drop earrings and a black Rauwolf clutch. Soft waves and a deep berry lip topped off the vampy look to perfection.
The fierce Anna Kendrick wore a custom Thakoon coral gown with a keyhole accent and diamond collar. The color and drape of the gown offered an elegant look. The blush of her cheeks and lips are the perfect with her gown, and the slightly smokey eyes are a dream compliment. The hair is twisted classic updo with a slight swept. Diamond earrings and a cocktail ring continued the classic glamour theme.
SPECIAL MENTION: LADY GAGA
Lady gaga might have looked her usual self on the red carpet, it was her performance look that won me over. What I always love about GAGA is she looks her best when she is at her neutral best and this was THE look. With a white gown, grey hair and neutral look, this was probably her best look for me. It’s natural, fresh and she CAN sing.

Dressed to the nines for the Fashion Oscars, BFAs were held at London Coliseum. While there were official winners to the categories, the Red carpet had its own share of triumphs
The style award barely ever missteps the red carpet and this was no exception. The style award winner showed how its done and why did she win that award in a white wide legged Misha Nonoo jumpsuit and stunning black Dior jacket with Christian Louboutin shoes and a quirky printed Anya Hindmarch clutch. Keeping it chic she finished it off with side swept hair and red lips for that perfect contrast in a monochromatic look.
The fierce model in a side swept hair and some smokin’ hot makeup was picture perfect in the sequined Burberry with thigh high slit. The gown with its black panels added the perfect contrast and the model of the year pulled it with aplomb. While she changed (read heated) things up for after party, even on red carpet the model’s fierce personality shone through the glam evening wear.
In a blush pink Victoria beckham dress, Anna Kendrick picked the perfect shade of metallic Christian Louboutin heels and clutch to compliment the tone of her dress. The peach perfect actress nailed the look like a pro and hit it out the ball park as well as any model but with a sophisticated twang. Finishing it off with a pulled back hair was a great move to show off her De Beers studs that let the blush number do all the talking without hogging the limelight
The quirky model always tend to bring her A game on the red carpet and Miss Chung surely did not disappoint in her silver Emilia Wickstead number. It’s all about details for this one, the tailored look, cinched waist, the collar all were present. While she accessorized with Paul Chew shoes, it was her Takeout container Charlotte Olympia clutch that provided the perfect blue quirk accent to that silver and was probably one of the most fun details and highlights of the night
The new face of the major makeup Line, Kendall has been in spotlight for more reasons than one. However for the Fashion night, the model strode in like a winner with straight hair and a strapless monochrome jumpsuit number by Emilio Pucci. The fun black back and white front was another one of the night’s monochrome look that was rounded off with a pop of red. She completed her look with a black clutch but it was the simple yet efficient mesh translucent heels that made her outfit a complete winner (the perfect footwear choice)
Charlotte Gainsborough did everything right what Ather Hafeez for Sana Safinaz did not during its presentation. In head-to-toe in LV SS’15, the actress sported a sequined mini dress with front zipper detail. Downplaying that heavy dazzle, she paired it up with the cropped leather motorcycle jacket and patent ankle booties, styling off the glam biker look perfectly. Though couple of edgy accessories wouldn’t have hurt, but just a minor gripe one can let go.
The Revenge actress surprisingly pulled an ivory tailored suit to perfection. Sporting the banana republic suit with a plunging neckline, the actress strutted her stuff like a pro, with the satin jacket a a cape. The perfect length of the trousers wins it for me (its one of the most important things). Kudos for keeping the other details simple and finishing the look with the dark lip color. Perfect for the winter night
The man is epitome of being Sharply dressed…everytime.. do I even need to say he nails it?. The shawl satin lapels with a long scarf positioned perfectly with the perfect length, Ford attended BFAs in a sharp suit.
Picking up LV veritcal striped suit for the event, Harry Styles dressed event and age appropriate and pretty much nailed it. The double breasted blazer, the boots and the buttoned down shirt sans the tie, the mod look suits him to a T. Its a look that is hippie, young and formal all together.
GARETH PUGH and CARSON MCCOLL
The couple made one of its together appearances on the red carpet of BFAs in their own statement styles. While it was Gareth’s boots that I loved coz it just complimented designer’s sass , it was his partner Mccoll’s kimono inspired quilted leather jacket that caught my attention. The jacket was unusual yet perfect for a fall red carpet outing such as this.
The actor put a spin on the conventional suit by combining multiple pieces from Burberry steering the look away from the usual look. Though the look had a relaxed vibe about it, with the oversized blazer over the checked blazer (its winter up there can you blame the guy), the look was sharp and made for a welcome change from the usual blues and black suits. The mixup was perfectly balanced with a charcoal shirt and tie paired with black trouser with that brown jacket.
In a complimenting outfit with his girlfriend, race driver Lewis Hamilton opted for a grey suit, accenting it off with burgundy details. Looking dapper with a tie and pocket square, the Formula 1 star’s accessories tied in with the former Pussycat Doll’s deep red lipstick and intricate detailing on her gown. Good move on keeping the shoes in sync with the accessories.
The English rapper hardly looked like his hippie self on the red carpet at the BFAs. The gentleman in question sported a plum Paul Smith suit that was a perfect winter color and an unusual choice for red carpet, but am always up for someone having fun with fashion and taking it up a notch. He finished off the look with black Jimmy Choos, rounding off the look just right
With his famous sky high quiff, the fun designer, as expected, put his fun twist to a formal event. Textured tweed jacket, black trouser a white shirt, the designer had to pull it altogether with that olive and blue fun blazer that pops the whole look to another level. The designer, who is never afraid of color, knows his sense of balance and pulls off his choices with aplomb. Trust Mr. Holland to bring a lil’ more fun to the party.
